1. The Whisper

Updated: Jun 28

Most leaders miss the signals that matter most.

Not because they’re not paying attention. Because they’re paying attention to the wrong things.

Early in my career I learned to listen for what I call ‘the whisper’ - the small, easy-to-dismiss piece of intelligence that turns out to be the most important thing in the room.

In one of the largest financial services tenders I ever worked on, a contact mentioned almost in passing that our client’s client was meeting with competitors. Not with us.

The CEO dismissed it. Strong relationship. Too costly to change. Not a real risk.

I’d seen that confidence before. I’d watched it cost another company its entire portfolio.

So I pushed for a meeting. Asked the hard questions. And what we found changed everything - including whether we submitted a tender at all.

The whisper was right. The relationship wasn’t the protection everyone assumed it was.

High-stakes leadership isn’t just about what you know. It’s about what you’re willing to hear.

What signal are you currently dismissing?
